- Cabin Leader Program
Cabin leaders are responsible for supervising
students on a 24-hour basis. Responsible high school students,
college students, or parents usually work out well on a volunteer
basis. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT CABIN LEADERS BE CAREFULLY
SCREENED. Poor Cabin leaders can encourage misbehavior among
the children, disrupt instructional programs, and lack discretion
in disciplining a student. The Rancho El Chorro staff will
help recruit and train high school cabin leaders from your
local high school.
Cabin leaders serve several vital functions:
- See to the safety and comfort of
students in their cabins.
- Set the tone for enthusiastic, cooperative
participation.
- One or two cabin leaders accompanies
each trail walk to aid with supervision and, when necessary,
escort student(s) back from walks should a problem arise.
Sources of cabin leaders:
- High school teachers and counselors
help to select mature high school students in advance of
your stay. If you wish to use high school cabin leaders,
contact Rancho El Chorro Outdoor School.
- Parents, student teachers, and counselors
from your school are another choice worth pursuing.
To ensure success with your cabin leaders:
- Whether you use Parent chaperones
or High School students the Rancho El Chorro staff will
meet with them when to give them training and answer any
questions or concerns.
- Have stand-by cabin leaders available
in case someone can't make it at the last minute.
